Set in one of the most romantic landscapes in the world, the Ring of Kerry, with its ancient lakes, mountains and stunningly wild coastline, Picín is a 200-year old stone cottage that is now a luxury B and B for couples.

You enter via your own secluded terrace and pretty garden to a wonderfully light double height sitting room complete with French oak floor, Indian rugs and bookcases. Under the stone lintel a door opens onto the bathroom, warm-toned with its reclaimed herringbone floor, wood-burning stove and cast-iron slipper bath. It's a brilliant mix of old – a 16th-century wardrobe and a mahogany and velvet sofa – and new – abstract paintings, polished granite sink and slate sills (from nearby Valentia Island).

Up the reproduction wood stairs you come to a long, bright, boat-like bedroom, with a maple floor that once belonged to a school, sheepskin rugs, beautifully detailed painted furniture and seaside landscapes. The room exudes warmth, light and space but it's also your very own eyrie, with a window seat that looks down onto the sitting room.

The owners believe in the importance of detail in everything, so they think you should have flowers in each of your rooms, damask and Egyptian cotton sheets to sleep under and fluffy towels and good soap in the bathroom. All the family are keen cooks, and enjoy getting you to try their newest bread, passion-fruit curds or jams made with fruit from the garden. Don't miss the granola, local smoked salmon and the organic bacon and black pudding from the owners' own pigs, perfect pan-fried with caramelised apples.

From Picín it's just a 10-minute walk to the nearest beach and five minutes in the car to the stunning national park and beach at Derrynane.
